The 26 biweekly Issues of Diffuse Bulletin Volume 1, explore the design and optimization of Overhead Canopies. We will describe the scattering from individual surfaces and periodic arrays. We will demonstrate how periodicity results in non-uniform coverage and describe why both optimal shaping and arraying are necessary for successful canopy design. We will illustrate how the Shape Optimizer can be used to produce optimal canopy shapes and how modulation can be used to minimize periodicity effects.
