Diffusion Coefficient Data Format
RPG has always tried to stay at the leading edge of technology and pioneer new frontiers.
Now that we can quantify how uniformly surfaces scatter sound, using the diffusion coefficient, and quantify how much of the incident sound is scattered in non-specular directions,
using the scattering coefficient, RPG has set out to experimentally measure a wide range of our products and new surfaces that you or your architect may be interested in using and
evaluating, with our solid prototyping 3D printer and Diffusion Goniometer.
To provide clear visual proof-of-performance specifications, RPG is publishing a new Diffusion Coefficient Data Format pictured at left.
The graphic illustrates the performance of three periods of RPG's modulated optimized diffusor the Modffusor at an angle of incidence of 60 degrees. Other angles are available.
On the top line we show the Diffusion Goniometer with loudspeaker, 37 measurement microphones and Modffusor samplse, the Specular Attenuation of the Modffusor compared to a flat panel and the Diffusion
Coefficient compared to a flat panel of equal width. The following 12 1/3-octave polar plots compare the spatial scattering of the Modffusor with a flat panel. Note the uniform Modffusor scattering,
compared to the specular scattering. The Modffusor offers the most uniform diffusion of any 1D diffusor ever tested. For more information on diffusion and scattering
coefficients, request a copy of our joint publication Acta Acustica, Vol. 92, 1-15 (2006). Also feel free to send us any proof of performance scattering data you receive from
