CEDIA EXPO 98

This years CEDIA EXPO 98 featured several educational sessions on the importance of acoustics in home theater design. Steve Hass of SH! Acoustics offered a hands-on presentation that nicely addressed the issues of sound isolation, HVAC, and acoustical surface treatment. RPG® was honored when Steve offered samples of several of our home theater products for the class to experience. The class was well received and a number of systems integrators have inquired about our products and research.

John Storyk and Sam Berkow of Walters-Storyk Design Group discussed their approach to home theater design and the power of the JBL Smaart program to validate installations and troubleshoot problematic rooms. We want to thank them for their continuing support of RPG® products and research.

Russ Herschelmann of R Herschelmann Designs continued his sold out tradition with a discussion of room modes and other acoustical issues. Thanks to Russ for presenting samples of RPG® products for the class to experience first hand.

Sean Olive of Harman International offered a wonderful scientific explanation of the various aspects of sound and our psychoacoustical perception of it. This was a very knowledgeable presentation and should help system integrators gain a more fundamental understanding of acoustics. We are collaborating with Sean in utilizing the Room Optimizer™ in Harman’s Multichannel Listening Laboratory. We appreciate his mention of the program.

Fred Ampel of Technology Visions and Floyd Toole of Harman Consumer Group offered one of the finest seminars on combining the theoretical and experimental aspects of acoustics. As usual, Floyd presented the most educated and thorough discourse on home theater acoustics we have witnessed. Fred demonstrated how to measure and troubleshoot critical listening rooms. This course is probably going to become a CEDIA institution. Thanks Floyd and Fred.

John B. Dahl of Lucasfilm, Ltd. offered an excellent presentation on acoustical issues and demonstrated how to calculate room modes using an Excel program.

It is our view that as the power of multi-dimensional optimization and computer room modeling is brought to the critical listening room and home theater industry it will be used increasingly by designers to optimize room designs and loudspeaker, listener, and acoustical material placement. RPG® and CEDIA will be discussing opportunities to incorporate these new AcousticTools™ at next years meeting.

AES

Dr. Peter D’Antonio joined Russ Berger, Richard Schrag, and Jerry Lilly to discuss the nuts and bolts of acoustics at the AES workshop. The well received workshop was standing room only. We look forward to participating in future educational events for AES.

The traffic at our AES booth was very heavy and the show was well attended. Our software demonstrations of the Room Optimizer™, CATT-Acoustic prediction and auralization software, and RPG®’s in-house Shape Optimizer had attendees relishing the virtues of a virtual world.

RPG® products were well represented at the show. We demonstrated our new prototype AcouStand™ at the Hafler booth and were happy to meet Jerry Cave, Managing Director of Hafler. Thanks also to Tom Jung of DMP who has helped develop the first acoustical speaker stand. Sony’s exhibit featured RPG®’s VariScreen™ and Skylines®. We sincerely appreciate the support from David Kawakami, director of business development for Sony Electronics. David Kim of JBL continues to support RPG® products. We appreciate his interest and look forward to collaborating with him on future projects. DTS is now using our products at all of their trade show exhibits and we appreciate their support as well.

RPG® plans to expand its support of manufacturers at trade shows in an effort to improve the acoustics of these often acoustically-challenging presentations rooms. Interested manufacturers should contact Pamela Marchesano at pmarchesano@rpginc.com or 301-249-0044 well in advance of tradeshow deadlines to insure our collaboration.

ASA/NCAC
Dr. Peter D’Antonio will be chairing a session on Characteristics of Scattering in the Architectural Acoustics Session of the 136th Acoustical Society of America Meeting on Friday, October 16, 1998 in Norfolk, Virginia at 9 AM.

The session will include the following papers:

A review of diffusor design over the past two decades
by Peter D’Antonio

Practical prediction techniques for sound diffusion
by Trevor J. Cox.

Experimental measurement and characterization of scattering surfaces
by Peter D’Antonio and Trevor J. Cox

Diffuser assessment using surface spherical harmoincs
by James A. S. Angus

Diffusion coefficients
by Tristan J. Hargreaves, Trevor J. Cox, Y.W. Lam, and Peter D’Antonio

An analytical decomposition of the Biot-Tolstoy edge diffraction model
by U. Peter Svensson, Roger Andersson, and John Vanderkooy.

On Friday, October 16, between 6 and 8 PM, RPG® will be exhibiting and participating in the NCAC meeting, which is held jointly with ASA in Norfolk. RPG® will be announcing its all-acoustic product line featuring:

Pre-engineered acoustical diffusing, absorbing, variable acoustics, and performance products

Optimized custom surfaces using RPG®’s new Shape Optimizer software in conjunction with the new CHAOS program

Optimization, prediction, simulation, and auralization software

Electronic architecture variable-acoustics enhancement system
