On The Road Again! Pacific Northwest Following the AES, the RPG® roadshow moved to Portland, the home of Boora Architects. Dr. DAntonio presented RPG®s new web site and Shape Optimizer, which bridges the gap between architects and acousticians. The Collaborative Holistic Acoustical Optimization System (CHAOS) allows almost any shape envisioned by an architect to be acoustically optimized to provide the specified scattering required by the acoustician. On to Seattle, where the mean free path for both construction projects and Starbucks coffee seems to be about 10 yards. Pamela Marchesano met with Lew Barrettour Pro Audio Manufacturers repand visited all of our sales outlets on the shores of Puget Sound. Dr. DAntonio met with our architectural rep Ken Huber and presentations were made to all of the acoustical consultants and architects in the metropolitan area. Dr. DAntonio had the opportunity to visit the new Benaroya Hall designed by Cyril Harris and LMN Architects. A seminar was presented at LMN on the RPG® product line. Included in the presentation was the new frontiers the CHAOS system and CATT-Acoustics V7.1 room modeling and auralization offers the design team. Norfolk, Virginia Dr. DAntonio chaired a session on the Characterization of Scattering. Presentations on the latest predictive scattering theories and diffusion metrics were made by Dr. Trevor Cox, Dr. James Angus, Dr. Peter Svenssen, and Dr. DAntonio. The NCAC held their meeting jointly with ASA and RPG® participated with a table top exhibition of their acoustical and software products during the well attended reception. Dr. DAntonio also participated in the 2-day ASA/NCAC Auralization seminar presented by Mendel Kleiner and Peter Svensson. The seminar was well attended by many acousticians from across the country. Everyone got a very good idea of the historical development, intricacies, and state-of-the-art nature of auralization. The CATT-Acoustics V7.1 was demonstrated and the new Concept Hall Flexible Parameterized Room Model was introduced. Journal of the Audio Engineering Society In November, the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society is publishing a review article written by Dr. Peter DAntonio and Dr. Trevor Cox entitled Two Decades of Sound Diffusor Design and Development, Part 1: Applications and Design. Abstract The last twenty years has seen a vast increase in knowledge concerning the application and design of sound diffusors used in architectural acoustics. An ability to predict, measure, quantify and optimize the scattering from surfaces has been developed. The addition of numerous surface types has significantly expanded the acoustical palette. New diffusors have found widespread use in all facets of architectural acoustic design. This review documents the historical development of sound diffusing surfaces that have predictable performance and illustrates their applications. Part II of this paper reviews methods for predicting, measuring, and characterizing the quality of scattering produced by these surfaces. |
