The
Discovery Channel Latin America,
Miami, FL
A new, first-of-its-kind television broadcast facility for a premier
cable provider offered the opportunity to bring together essential
design directions explored by STUDIOS since the firm's inception.
The project combines an extraordinary range of influences, both from
the client and the architect, and has allowed the firm to draw on
extensive work with high-technology companies and the exploration
into future officing.
At
a technical level, the objective was to develop a state of the art
digital television production facility, broadcasting seven channels
simultaneously in three languages around the clock. Acoustically
sensitive audio and video production areas have been effectively
joined with master control and satellite transmission components
in a unique, user and visitor friendly environment.
Officing requirements included space for over 200 creative and marketing
staff who provide programming for the broadcast of channels such
as the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and People & Arts.
High levels of change and collaborative work dynamics have been
effectively supported by recycled timber elements that organize
the distribution of key utilities. Flexible zones are arranged adjacent
to the timber trusses accommodating individual and group work styles.
STUDIOS' design addresses these technical and officing directives
in a humanistic manner, taking the edge off of high tech by embracing
the use of technology rather than technology as object. This, along
with the firms' signature use of bold form, pattern, color, and
material marry with a new workplace typology to celebrate the free-thinking
culture of the Discovery organization.
The acoustic consultant was Russ
Berger Design Group.
