Masterdisk,
New York,
NY
"Francis Manzella Design recently had the pleasure of designing
a new high resolution mastering room for Masterdisk's newest engineer:
Leon Zervos. Coming over from Absolute Audio, where Francis Manzella
had designed his last room, Leon was insistent that we do it 'just
like my last room' only a little bigger. I assured him that we would
give him a refined monitoring environment with improved accuracy,
and a beautiful acoustic interior design that would surely impress
his clients and be easy to work in for long sessions.
With the help of products from RPG® and the fine work of CHBO
contractors, the room has been a great success. This room is primarily
a stereo playback / mastering environment, but as Masterdisk is
doing more and more surround work, the specifications had to be
5.1 friendly with an easy conversion to full surround as required
by the particular session. Leon chose Dunlavy V main left and right
monitors, which are powered by Crown Studio Reference amplifiers.
A modified Refections Free Zone (RFZ) design was implemented
by FM Design with the addition of front wall RPG® Diffractal®
kickers behind the main monitors intended mostly for the surround
speakers.
The Diffractals® in combination with a front wall central cluster
of RPG® Abffusors® makes for some absolutely startling
imaging. Right off the bat, when we walked in to setup the system,
the imaging was deep and three dimensional. With a little tweeking
of the final position for the loudspeakers, Leon was thrilled. There
is also an array of RPG® Diffractals® behind the listening
position to help diffuse the direct return from the rear of the
room, as well as the side reflections steered into it by the RFZ
geometry. Varying depth Helmholtz Slat trapping on the rear side
walls as well as deep trapping in the ceiling and soffits are combined
with surface mounted RPG® Absorbor panels on the front
side walls. This allows some of the direct signal from the surround
speakers, as well the 'wrap around' diffracted signals from the
main monitors to be randomnly absorbed or sent on into the front
wall Diffractal® / Abffusor® systems.
All in all the combination of beautiful stretched fabric finishes,
wood floors, and Custom RPG® products have combined to give
Leon a wonderfully accurate and exciting room in which to work.
As always, FM Design and it's customer are both pleased with the
quality of product and service received from RPG®".
