RPG® Is The Acoustical Reference Of The Music Industry
RPG® Diffusor Systems, Inc. is unique in the music industry. This
is due to the depth of its commitment, the wide range of its expertise
and products, the quality of its products, continuous innovation, and
the respect from other manufacturers and industry professionals. When
you listen to your next CD, movie, video, radio broadcast, or live concert,
are hearing RPG®
technology at work, because RPG® is now used in every facet of the
music and entertainment industry.
RPG® has worked behind the scenes and played a supporting role for
over 15 years and is the industry's best kept secret to the end users.
To the acoustical consultants, designer, specifiers, and music industry
insiders however, RPG® has earned the reputation as the acoustical
reference of the music and acoustical industries. Because of RPG®'s
wide penetration into these industries, it is now regarded as the acoustical
cornerstone.
RPG® was founded
by Dr. Peter D'Antonio (AKA Dr. Diffusor)
RPG® was founded in 1983 by Dr. Peter D'Antonio, a physicist and
acoustician with an international reputation. Dr. D'Antonio has numerous
publications in reviewed scientific journals, text books, and magazines,
many registered trademarks and patents and has been an altruistic educator
in seminars offered at the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Synergetic
Audio Concepts, CEDIA, NSCA, Acoustical Society of America, National Council
of Acoustical Consultants, etc. He is a Fellow of the AES, a Fellow of
the Acoustical Society of America, a professional affiliate of the American
Institute of Architects, Chairman of the AES Characterization of Acoustical
Materials committee, member of the ISO Random Incidence Scattering Coefficient
working group and adjunct professor of acoustics at the Cleveland Institute
of Music and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. His research has also
been extensively covered in several text books including The
Master Handbook of Acoustics, by F. Alton Everest and Sound
System Engineering by Don and Carolyn Davis.
Dr. D'Antonio has also been associated with the music industry since 1973
as a musician, recording engineer and audiophile. In 1973 he designed
Underground Sound, the prototypical studio which set the stage for modern
control room design. This studio defined the philosophy of combining a
reflection-free zone, RFZ around the mix position and a diffuse
zone using RPG® diffusors in the rear, to provide passive surround
sound.
RPG® Products Minimize Acoustic Distortion
Dr. D'Antonio indicates that "in the early 70s there really was no acoustical
products industry aside from fabric wrapped fiberglass and sculptured
foam absorbing products. Diffusors were simply not a part of the acoustical
palette. Recording studio design was a trial and error experience with
some successes and some failures."
Dr. D'Antonio claims that "In those days there was a clear difference
between the recording hardware and the acoustical design in professional
and 'semi-pro' studios." In the early 80s Dr. D'Antonio set out to identify
the problems and goals of modern studio design and developed the concept
of a reflection free zone around the mix position from early research
by Don Davis, Chips Davis, Russ Berger and Neil Grant in Live-End-Dead-End
studios.
To complete the design, Dr. D'Antonio then developed the reflection phase
grating diffusor or RPG®, which attenuates the reflections from the
control rooms rear wall and provides enveloping surround sound. Today,
RPG®s are standard fare in recording studios and RPG® research
has set the standard for modern recording studio design. RPG®'s products
and research design concepts have been used in over a thousand facilities
worldwide, with tens of thousands of diffusor systems installed.
Today, recording studios have changed from the early 70s. Dr. D'Antonio
indicates that "The gap between professional and what is now called 'project
studios' has narrowed significantly with digital recording and processing.
However, the acoustical gap is even wider due the modern acoustical digital
measurement equipment, talented studio designers, and passive acoustical
products and designs such as the RPG® Diffusor Systems.
To bridge this last acoustical gap, RPG® developed a series of cost
effective acoustical packages containing reflection control products,
such as the Abflector,
new Polyflex and fire-safe Melaflex ProFoam
and ProCorner acoustical
foam, the Flatffusor
digital diffsorber, dedicated low-frequency Modex
Corner modal absorbers, and a new 2-dimensional number theoretic sound
diffusor called the Skyline®,
& Skyline®LP which
is the most effective diffusor ever developed. The VariScreen
free standing variable acoustics panel and the Room
Optimizer software rounded out the acoustic tools needed for
project studios." RPG® also provides its expertise in placing these
AcousticTools® appropriately in the room for optimum effect.
RPG® Is Your Acoustical Microscope
Now project studio owners can have both cost effective digital hardware,
as well as digital AcousticTools®, to create a modern control room
with sonic accuracy, reproducibility, and transferability.
Sonic accuracy means we can hear the music with correct frequency
balance, accurate images, and appropriate envelopment. This makes it possible
to properly and easily adjust volume balance, panning, equalization, reverberation,
and other signal processing.
Reproducibility means we can create these modern control rooms
repeatedly so that each room in a multi-room facility can now offer the
same neutral monitoring environment.
Transferability is also now in reach. You can finally be assured
that the mix you create in your project studio will not only be accurate,
but it will sound the same in another properly treated project studio.
Your creativity is now transferable.
RPG® Research Leads The Music Industry
One additional aspect of RPG®'s industry dominance is its research.
RPG® Acoustics Research, headed by Dr. Peter D'Antonio, has published
numerous technical papers in reviewed acoustical journals. Their products
are painstakingly tested for absorptive and diffusive performance. In
fact, Dr. D'Antonio has developed the pending diffusion coefficient standard
to evaluate potential diffusing surfaces. This reliance on research and
documentation has won RPG® the respect of the international acoustical
community.
The effectiveness of RPG® Acoustics Research is evidenced by the
fact that Mix Magazine Technical Award Winners for studio design and acoustics
including Bob Todrank, Chips Davis, Russ Berger, John Storyk, and
Studio Bau:ton are avid RPG® specifiers. In fact, RPG®
has itself been nominated for TEC awards.
RPG® is also specified by professional acousticians and select members
of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants. This body of acoustical
professionals is very discerning in the products they specify, because
their integrity and reputation depend on it. RPG® has won this trust.
In addition to developing the template for modern control room design,
RPG® has sold tens of thousands of diffusor systems to over a thousand
facilities worldwide. This means that when it comes to making a choice
about purchasing acoustical conditioning for your project studio, RPG®
offers you a proven track record of successful performance.
In its 15 year history, RPG® has established a track record for delivering
the highest acoustical performance and is considered the acoustical reference
of the music industry. Remember their slogan: "Listen to the Music, Not
the Room!"
