Sound can either be absorbed, reflected, or diffused. In many rooms, flat reflective surfaces can cause interfering reflections and excessive reverberation, which can corrupt music quality, speech intelligibility, and comfort. One traditional approach to controlling the reflections and excess reverberation is to utilize absorptive panels, which consist of a porous absorbing core, typically fiberglass, mineral wool, or foam, covered with fabric, perforated vinyl, or newer Pannello panels with paintable, non-woven matt surfaces. In addition to our more advanced BAD Panels, RPG Diffusor Systems, Inc. also offers fabric wrapped panels in a wide range of thicknesses and textiles and has also developed a simple and reliable method of attachment, which offers fixed or removable installation, utilizing the ImpaleIt™ clip.

Problem
Rooms with flat, untreated reflective drywall or plaster surfaces, generate strong specular reflections and long reverberation times and levels, which interfere with speech intelligibility and music quality. In these room there is often a limit on the depth of surface treatment and the budget.

Solution
A traditional solution to control room reflections and excessive reverberation has been the use of fabric wrapped fiberglass panels. While this solution is rather dated and of waning interest to architects, it is still employed as a stop gap measure when the budget for acoustical treatment is limited. While RPG offers an extensive range of higher performance alternatives, we also offer standard fabric panels, with chemically hardened edges, in a wide range of thicknesses, edge conditions, fabrics and mountings for both wall and ceiling treatment. RPG also offers a high impact panel option, which adds a 1/8”, 12 pcf surface layer that provides impact resistance and also tackability. In the photo we show a 4”, 2” and 1” fabric wrapped panel in a range of fabrics from standard Guilford FR701 panel fabrics to higher quality fabrics. We can also evaluate the acoustical transparency of potential fabrics, using our impedance tube measurement facility.

Absorption

The graph shows the typical increase in absorption efficiency as a function of thickness for an A (surface) mounting. Additional low frequency absorption can be obtained by mounting the panel away from the boundary surface.

Installation

Fixed Surface Mount
Simply secure the ImpaleIt™ clip to a surface, with screws or with a hook and loop fastener. Make a mark at the desired height of the panel and 1” above that for alignment. Line up the panel with the higher mark and gently pierce the back of the panel with the triangular prongs. Then press firmly into the ImpaleIt™ clip and press downward until the panel reaches the desired height.

RPG also offers Rotofast connectors on request.

Removable Surface Mount
It is often desirable to be able to remove a panel. To do so, simply attach a “Z” channel to the surface and hang the ImpaleIt™ clip on the channel. Make a mark at the desired height and 1” above that for alignment. Align the panel at the mark 1” above the desired height and gently pierce the back of the panel with the triangular prongs. Then firmly press the panel into the ImpaleIt™ clip, allowing it to pierce the rear of the panel and push downward to the desired height.

RPG also offers Rotofast connectors on request
