Absorption With A View: Acousticians have long sought a fully transparent,
absorptive finish to control reverberation in a room, while maintaining
the view through glazing. RPG® is now offering a new patented microperforated,
clear panel that provides significant mid-low frequency absorption. The
Clearsorber Panel™ offers a long awaited solution to providing absorption with
a view and is finding immediate application in architectural acoustics.
The Clearsorber Panel is a 0.20" (5 mm) thick panel with 0.02" (0.5 mm) holes
spaced 0.2" (5 mm) apart. It provides absorption through high viscous
losses as air passes through the small holes, which are comparable in
size to an air boundary layer. This inherent damping eliminates the need
for fiberglass or other porous materials in the air cavity between the
Clearsorber Panel and the reflective surface behind it. Thus it is now possible
to provide particle free, absorption with a view. All that is necessary
is an air cavity between the Clearsorber Panel and the rear reflecting surface.
To augment the mid-low frequency absorption, the Clearsorber Panel can be curved,
tilted or shaped to provide redirection or diffusion in the mid-high frequency
region.
Problem
Acousticians have long sought a transparent, absorptive "glass-like" surface
to control excessive reverberation in rooms with glazing or flat reflective
surfaces.
Solution
RPG® is now offering a new patented microperforated, transparent, inherently
damped panel absorber called the Clearsorber Panel™, which provides excellent
absorption, while maintaining visibility through the panel.
Absorption:
Clearsorber Panel™
provides absorption, because the microperforated panel, when spaced from
a transparent or non-transparent reflective surface, offers high viscous
losses when air passes through the surface. The Clearsorber Panel™ is inherently
damped and does not require porous absorption in the cavity between the
Clearsorber Panel™ and the reflecting wall behind it.
Installation
The Clearsorber Panel™ is simply hung or fastened in front of a reflective surface.
It can also be hung in free space, provided that a Clearsorber Panel™ panel
is spaced on either side of a non-perforated transparent panel. In this
mounting, both sides of the panel are absorptive. Many shapes and configurations
are possible.

Benefits
Inherent damping provided by an array of microperforations,
offers high absorption in the mid-lows.
The
Clearsorber Panel™ does not require any porous absorption in the
cavity between the microperforated panel and the rear reflective
wall.
The
absence of porous absorption means a fiber-free installation.
The
non-combustible feature of this system means it can be used
in any environment.
The
transparent and fiber-free nature of the Clearsorber Panel™ means
it can be used in front of glazing, thus offering absorption
without compromising the view.
The
transparent feature of the Clearsorber Panel™ offer potential use
in a wide range of facilities either to provide absorption
while maintaining a view, provide an absorptive transparent
cover for artwork, stained glass or other interesting surface
application, provide freely suspended absorption while allowing
daylighting, and many more applications.
The
Clearsorber Panel™ may be applied flat and parallel to a reflective
surface or shaped to provide mid-high diffusion, thus offering
diffsorption with a view. It can also be shaped for a free-standing
artistic acoustic sculpture.
Etching
offers the opportunity for personalization and surface artwork.
