“The Cinerama renovation presented an interesting challenge to
design a cinema in which the room’s surfaces complemented the
loudspeakers to provide an enveloping and immersive surround sound
experience. Traditionally, cinemas have been designed to be primarily
absorptive. In this approach, the room does not contribute to the
surround experience. Our goal was to utilize sound diffusion and absorption.
On the wall surfaces we used RPG®’s broad bandwidth Diffractal®
diffusor in conjunction with drapery. On the ceiling, we collaborated
with Dr. D’Antonio to create the first sound diffusing cinema
ceiling using their Shape Optimizer software. The result is truly
aesthetic acoustical architecture. Field tests have verified compliance
with all THX specifications. By all accounts, Cinerama represents
a cinematic sonic milestone. Thanks to RPG® for their expertise

“The multimillion dollar renovation of Cinerama presented a
series of unique challenges. The need to preserve historical aspects
and return to its original grandeur had to be weighed with creating
a state of the art acoustical venue to exhibit the latest digital
cinema technology. BOORA worked with acoustician Neil Grant of Harris-Grant
Associates to integrate RPG®’s Diffractal® and shape
optimized ceiling wave into the architecture. The ceiling was integrated
with lighting and HVAC to create an exciting and functional surface.
RPG® Diffractals® were integrated with the surround loudspeakers
and finished to match and integrate with the drapery. This provided
a link with the past and a sonic bridge to the future. Cinerama
has provided the Seattle area with an unparalleled cinema venue.
