Kips Bay Theater The annual Kips Bay Showhouse in New York City brings together the best interior designers in the region to create over twenty individual rooms reflecting some of the most unique designs for spaces ranging from eat-in kitchens to music parlors. In its 30+ day run, the Showhouse was visited by over a thousand interior designers, architects and homeowners looking to see the latest fashions and trends. SH! Acoustics had the privilege of being brought in to the Showhouse by famed home theater designer, Theo Kalomirakis, to create a new style of contemporary home theater that featured unique architectural elements, metalwork, translucent fabric, multi-color changing lighting and, of course, optimum acoustics for the audio-visual system playback.
It has
been a year since we finished the theater at Kips Bay Showhouse and people
still talk about it. To a great extent the success of that project was
based on the spectacular performance of the RPG treatments that were designed
in by SH! Acoustics and hidden behind the decorative facade of the design.
In our business our goal has always been the seamless incorporation of
technology and design. The RPG products and science is one of the main
reasons we can achieve this goal As with most of our theaters, we strive to optimize the acoustical quality in the room by using tested, engineered products within the design scheme that can allow us to predict the outcome with great certainty. When we are dealing with the integration of elements from a multitude of disciplines, it is not possible to do much “tweaking” of the acoustic environment after the fact by moving or substituting treatments. Therefore, we need to be very confident that the stated performance of acoustical treatments on paper is going to match what actually occurs in the installed condition. This is why we insisted on using a variety of RPG treatments – including BAD Panels and BAD Arcs along with Skylines. The right combination and placement of these RPG materials gave a wonderful evenness and envelopment to the Theater while still providing a fairly economical solution. -Steve Haas, SH! Acoustics
